Ground squirrel is a rewarding animal to photograph and observe. These agile and curious little animals live in larger colonies on grasslands with lower vegetation. The best place to get to know them is the park in Radouč near Mladá Boleslav. They are quite used to people there and it is very easy to get their attention. Sadly, thanks to that, you will not be able to watch their natural behavior. Their only interest will be your presence with some food for which they will be happy to come to you. On the other hand, you can get very close to them, or rather, they come to you, and you will have a lot of opportunities for close-up photos as well.
I recommend getting there in the morning. For better light conditions and also because of the number of people and dog walkers that fill the park before noon. Unfortunately, ground squirrels are quite big sleepers and it is impossible to capture them in the beautiful atmosphere of dawn. Expect the first curious heads to poke out around 7 in the morning and no sooner. During summertime, the sun already tends to be quite high and intensively hot at that point. That's why it's a good idea to plan the trip for a day when it's at least a little bit cloudy.
