LITTLE GREBE
(TACHYBAPTUS RUFICOLLIS)
I've been lazy a lot lately :(
I was kind of thinking about where to move next with photography and making plans for new projects. And even though I don't completely figure out where to go next, I felt that I had to get out to take some pictures. Getting up again before dawn. Experience that feeling when Im freezing and waiting for something that doesn't even have to show up. Touch my camera again and remember what function I assigned to each button and wonder how quickly I forget how important it is to get used to all the functions again so that everything is fast and intuitive.

An unplanned encounter with these little birds made me happy. I did go out to take photos of herons, which would have happened. But they chose the exact place where they successfully hid behind a fallen tree. thereby ruining my chances for a good photo. However, I managed to be so close to these beautiful creatures for the first time. Watching them calmly float past me with their so typical "beep beep beep" sound. The light was not very kind to me and I tried to take photos even at such short times as 1/20, which is not quite ideal, and as a result, many photos were slightly blurred. At least I tested my gear and myself. That I'm still able to get up at 4:30 in the morning. Get in the car and drive to the location where I freeze still at -5°C with the expectation that I will be able to see and photograph what I have planned. The last one didn't work out :) but I still had a good feeling about it. I met a few roe deers on the way. I was accompanied by a kingfisher, who was flying here and there. I also had the opportunity to watch cormorants catching fish. And before I went back, I explore the location again and probably found an even better place for the next photo shoot. Maybe it will work out ... and if not, something else unexpected will appear, which will give me more will try again and again.

Little Grebe (Tachybaptus ruficollis)
The little grebe is a small water bird with a pointed bill. The adult is unmistakable in summer, predominantly dark above with its rich, rufous colour neck, cheeks and flanks, and bright yellow gape. The rufous is replaced by a dirty brownish grey in non-breeding and juvenile birds.
Juvenile birds have a yellow bill with a small black tip, and black and white streaks on the cheeks and sides of the neck as seen below. This yellow bill darkens as the juveniles age, eventually turning black in adulthood.
In winter, its size, buff plumage, with a darker back and cap, and “powder puff” rear end enable easy identification of this species. The little grebe's breeding call, given singly or in duet, is a trilled repeated weet-weet-weet or wee-wee-wee which sounds like a horse whinnying.
